Dental Care Without the Anxiety

At My Scottsdale Dentist, we go out of our way to make sure you are comfortable. Dr. Poulos literally wrote the book on it: his publication "Secret Weapons for Painless Dentistry" reflects decades of refining techniques to help anxious patients get the care they need without stress.

Whether your anxiety is mild or severe, we have a sedation option that fits. Our goal is for you to leave thinking, "That was not bad at all."

Sedation Options

Progressive Relaxation

For patients with mild anxiety, our calming environment, gentle approach, and step-by-step communication are often enough. We explain everything before we do it so there are no surprises.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A safe, mild sedative inhaled through a small mask over your nose. Nitrous oxide helps manage pain, gag reflexes, and anxiety while keeping you fully awake and responsive. Effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home.

Oral Conscious Sedation

A prescription sedative taken before your appointment produces deep relaxation without putting you to sleep. You remain conscious and can respond to instructions, but you will likely remember little of the procedure. A companion must drive you to and from the appointment.

I.V. Sedation

For patients with severe anxiety or those undergoing extensive procedures, intravenous sedation provides the deepest level of relaxation while you remain safely monitored throughout. This is ideal for lengthy procedures like implant placement or full-mouth reconstruction.

Who Benefits from Sedation?

  • Patients with dental phobia or severe anxiety
  • Those who need extensive dental work completed in fewer visits
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex
  • Those who have difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia alone
  • Patients with sensitive teeth or gums
  • Anyone who has had a traumatic dental experience in the past

You do not have to be embarrassed about dental anxiety. It is incredibly common, and we are here to help.
