What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Knowing what to do in the first minutes after a dental emergency can save your tooth. Here are step-by-step instructions for the most common emergencies:

Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root
  2. Rinse gently with water if dirty -- do not scrub, scrape, or remove any tissue fragments
  3. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place by gently biting down on a clean cloth
  4. If you can't reinsert it, place the tooth in a cup of milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation kit (available at pharmacies)
  5. Get to our office within 30 minutes -- the sooner we see you, the higher the chance of successful reimplantation

Severe Toothache

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce bacteria and soothe irritation
  2. Floss gently around the affected tooth to remove any trapped food debris
  3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
  4. Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen is preferred; avoid aspirin directly on gums as it can burn tissue)

Chipped or Broken Tooth

  1. Save any pieces of the broken tooth
  2. Rinse your mouth and the broken pieces with warm water
  3. Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes or until bleeding stops
  4. Apply a cold compress to the lip or cheek near the broken tooth to reduce swelling
  5. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue and cheeks

Lost Filling or Crown

  1. Save the crown or filling if you can find it
  2. Apply clove oil (available at pharmacies) to the sensitive area with a cotton swab for temporary pain relief
  3. If it's a crown, try to slip it back over the tooth using denture adhesive or toothpaste as temporary cement -- do not use super glue
