Don't Wait When Your Teeth Need Help Now

A dental emergency can happen to anyone, at any time -- a sports injury, biting down on something hard, sudden severe pain that wakes you at 3 AM. When it happens, you need a Scottsdale emergency dentist who can see you the same day and provide expert treatment to save your tooth and relieve your pain.

At My Scottsdale Dentist, Dr. Steven H. Poulos, Dr. Erica Elannan, and Dr. Mike Wassef have more than 50 years of combined experience treating dental emergencies. We keep same-day appointment slots open specifically for emergency patients, so you never have to wait days in pain or settle for a trip to the ER.

We Treat These Emergencies

  • Severe toothache -- Persistent pain unresponsive to over-the-counter medication
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth -- From trauma, biting hard objects, or weakened enamel
  • Knocked-out tooth -- Time-critical; the faster you get here, the better the chance of saving it
  • Lost filling or crown -- Exposes sensitive tooth structure to bacteria and further damage
  • Displaced or broken bridge -- Affects chewing, speech, and adjacent teeth
  • Abscess or dental infection -- Swelling, fever, or pus that could spread if untreated
  • Broken denture -- Affecting your ability to eat and speak comfortably
  • Jaw injury or trauma -- From falls, sports, accidents, or assault
  • Uncontrolled bleeding -- After extraction or from gum tissue
  • Loose or extruded tooth -- Partially dislodged from the socket

Why Choose a Scottsdale Emergency Dentist Over the ER?

When a dental emergency happens, many people instinctively head to the hospital emergency room. But for dental-specific emergencies, a dedicated emergency dentist in Scottsdale is almost always the better choice. Here's why:

Faster, Specialized Treatment

Emergency rooms handle medical emergencies first. A toothache or broken tooth will be triaged behind heart attacks, strokes, and broken bones. At My Scottsdale Dentist, you're seen by a dentist who treats dental emergencies every day, with the specialized tools and materials needed to fix the problem -- not just manage the pain.

Save Your Tooth

ERs can prescribe antibiotics and painkillers, but they can't re-cement a crown, splint a knocked-out tooth, or perform an emergency root canal. Our emergency dentists can. Quick action by a dental specialist often means the difference between saving and losing a tooth permanently.

Lower Cost

An ER visit for a dental issue typically costs $500-$1,500+ and results in a referral to a dentist anyway. Coming directly to our Scottsdale emergency dental office means you get definitive treatment at a fraction of the cost, often in a single visit.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Knowing what to do in the first minutes after a dental emergency can save your tooth. Here are step-by-step instructions for the most common emergencies:

Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root
  2. Rinse gently with water if dirty -- do not scrub, scrape, or remove any tissue fragments
  3. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket and hold it in place by gently biting down on a clean cloth
  4. If you can't reinsert it, place the tooth in a cup of milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation kit (available at pharmacies)
  5. Get to our office within 30 minutes -- the sooner we see you, the higher the chance of successful reimplantation

Severe Toothache

  1. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce bacteria and soothe irritation
  2. Floss gently around the affected tooth to remove any trapped food debris
  3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)
  4. Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen is preferred; avoid aspirin directly on gums as it can burn tissue)
  5. Call us immediately at (602) 881-2474 -- a toothache that persists beyond a few hours often indicates infection

Chipped or Broken Tooth

  1. Save any pieces of the broken tooth
  2. Rinse your mouth and the broken pieces with warm water
  3. Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes or until bleeding stops
  4. Apply a cold compress to the lip or cheek near the broken tooth to reduce swelling
  5. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue and cheeks
  6. Call us to schedule a same-day emergency visit

Lost Filling or Crown

  1. Save the crown or filling if you can find it
  2. Apply clove oil (available at pharmacies) to the sensitive area with a cotton swab for temporary pain relief
  3. If it's a crown, try to slip it back over the tooth using denture adhesive or toothpaste as temporary cement -- do not use super glue
  4. Call us right away -- an exposed tooth is vulnerable to decay and further damage

Don't wait with a dental emergency.

The longer you wait, the more complicated (and expensive) treatment becomes.
